Message From The President

It is with enormous pride that I welcome you to the Teamsters Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus website.

This is just one element of our strategic plan to provide you, our members, with frequent communications.  As the days and months go by you will continue to see updated news, information and activities of our Caucus.  Please let us know what you think of our site.  We welcome your input and ideas as we strive to achieve equality in the work place and our Union.

The establishment of our organization is a historic moment in the ongoing struggle to fight discrimination and promote equality.  There are thousands of GLBT workers who are denied the basic rights, benefits, and privileges that are so readily provided to others.  The goal of our organization is to address these issues.

Over the coming months we will be reaching out to our fellow Teamsters to build our membership.  We also are developing a training program to educate our brothers and sisters on GLBT related issues.

You don’t have to be a Teamster or GLBT to join.  Our Caucus is growing into an alliance of diverse people who share the common democratic values and principles of human dignity and equality.  Together, we make a difference.  Only by uniting will we have the strength to ensure equal rights for all.  I hope you will join us and become a member!

Everyone has had to fight for their rights, now it is our turn.

Bill Munger, President
Teamsters GLBT Caucus

Teamsters Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus Praises Convention Action on Diversity

Sexual orientation has now gained the same protection as gender, race, color, religion, age, physical ability and national origin as part of the Teamsters constitution. At the recent 27th International Convention of the Teamsters Union held in Las Vegas, convention delegates ratified a change to the Teamsters constitution, recommended by the Diversity Committee, that specifically named members' sexual orientation as protected.

"This is an outstanding improvement on the Teamsters constitution," said Bill Munger, Teamsters Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus (TGLBT) president. "I and other members of our caucus that were members of the convention's diversity committee pushed for this positive change.  We believe that all union members should be treated equally."

"These changes to our Constitution make the Teamsters one of the most progressive unions in the American labor movement," said General President Jim Hoffa. "I am proud that our great union has taken these important steps to protect and defend our members. These actions show that the Teamsters are truly united in moving forward together."

The Teamsters' commitment to diversity was also cemented in the Constitution, stating: "The International Union is proud of its history of unifying a diverse group of working men and women from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds in order to advance their economic, social and political interests. We are committed to the development of an organization which values and encourages the participation of women, individuals of various sexual orientations and members of racial, cultural, and ethnic groups in the policymaking and leadership roles at all levels of the International Union and its affiliated bodies."

Support Hotel Workers!

"According to recent statistics, the American gay and lesbian population represents close to a 60 billion travel market  We do love to travel!  Sadly, a staggering number of hotel workers who served us so well are struggling just to make ends meet.  Many of them are members of our own LGBT community..."
